Journalism: Another endangered species
Posted by Bill Gaffney | October 22nd, 2007The latest statistics out from the U.S. Labor Department paint a bleak picture for the feed of journalism.
While television, radio and online media outlets expand, newspapers continue to contract. With the constant pressure from the overcrowding of 24/7 resources leveraging newspaper reporting to produce commentary and opinion presented as fact, the advertising to covered costs and hire additional reporters has dried up.
Already, we’ve seen a paradigm shift in media outlet away from reporting to commentary, and without quality reporting stemming from newspapers, what will the television and radio programming be?
With journalism jobs in the US set to grow only five percent between now and 2014, I see more talking heads on the horizon and less actually reporting.
